THE 5-MINUTE CLINICAL CONSULT 2008
Evidence-Based Health Care is the integration of the best medical information with the values of the patient and your skill as a clinician. Less harm comes to our patients if we respect the medical literature; we have improved our content and visibility of the best evidence, so you can focus on how to apply it.
The Health Maintenance recommendations included here have been updated through the end of 2006. This content is based on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and has been organized by age into one-page recommendations. This summary will allow you to find the most current recommendations to improve health and prevent disease for each population of patients. Again, your feedback resulted in the inclusion of the Centers for Disease Control's immunization tables for quick reference. Why a Desktop and Online version of this content? To respond to your needs for more content and access to your resources at the office, in the hospital, and at home. These new features include easy maneuverability between chapters and sections, extra content not in the book (including a large section on pediatric conditions), and, later this year, introduction of our unique Continuing Medical Education (CME) program. Additionally, you will be able to download updates to this content at no additional cost.

MED FACTS POCKET GUIDE OF DRUG INTERACTION

MED FACTS POCKET GUIDE OF DRUG INTERACTION
Patients with acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD) or those treated
with dialysis or kidney transplantation are frequently prescribed numerous
medications. Drugs of many therapeutic classes are used to treat the underlying
diseases leading to CKD, such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension, while
others are used to control or treat the common complications of CKD, such
as anemia, renal bone disease and lipid disorders.Dialysis patients often are prescribed 10 to 12 medications. With such a large number of medications, there
is an increased risk for drug interactions. The accompanying table has been
prepared as a reference regarding the most clinically significant drug
interactions that might occur, together with an indication of the possible
consequence. This table should be used as a general guideline.
Sometimes information is known about one specific drug within a certain drug
class, while additional information is not known about other agents within the
same therapeutic category. Clinicians must be aware of this possibility and use
their best judgement when prescribing or assessing drug therapy.

SAFETY PHARMACOLOGY IN PHARMACEUTICAL

Safety pharmacology is the evaluation and study of the pharmacological effects of a potential drug that are unrelated to the desired therapeutic effect and, therefore, may present a hazard—particularly in individuals who already have one or more compromised or limited organ system functions. Unlike other nonclinical evaluations of a drug’s safety, these evaluations are usually conducted at doses close to the intended clinical dose. Recent International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, followed by versions by national regulatory authorities including those of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have made such evaluations mandatory before a potential drug is introduced into humans—while also failing to provide clear guidance as to how the requirements are to be met click here for download

The first edition has been updated to reflect changes in the legal status and availability of products and new opinions on and approaches to treatment. A new section on emergency hormonal contraception is also included. The information is presented in a structured formulary format with products described both generically and by brand name along with supplier details. Each chapter also contains a summary of key points with suggestions regarding the most appropriate products. GOODMAN & GILMAN'S THE PHARMACOLOGICAL BASIC OF THERAPEUTICS

There are few technical books that remain in a leadership position for 65 years. The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics is one. Physicians, teachers, and medical students have voted for Goodman & Gilman with their feet and with their pocketbooks for over six decades. The question is not whether this is an important and useful text, but why?...While Goodman & Gilman is no quick-read, it is surprisingly clearly written, logical and interesting. It is also an awesome realization to see how much one never knew, added to what one knew but forgot."--The Permanente Journal (The Permanente Journal ) The 11th edition of Goodman & Gilman continues to be the most comprehensive and authoritative single source on the pharmacology of drugs. The first edition was published by Alfred Gilman and Louis Goodman in 1941. It soon became known as the bible of pharmacology and, even though editorship and chapter authorships have changed continuously from edition to edition, this remains the gold standard of pharmacology textbooks....The print version should be on the reference shelf and the digital version on the computer desktop of all practicing pharmacologists, pharmacists, click here for download ebook

EBOOK HANDBOOK OF CONTRACEPTION

With so many contraceptive options currently available, and such a broad scope of issues to address, matching a patient to her best contraceptive method is more challenging today than it has ever been. To address this challenge, The Handbook of Contraception: A Guide for Practical Management is designed to give the modern health care provider uptodate information on safety, side effects, advantages, and disadvantages of each method, as well as guidance in selecting appropriate users and practical counseling tools. An effort has been made to cover the currently avail-
able methods and those that are expected to be available shortly, and to emphasize the growing list of noncontraceptive benefits associated with each method. An extensive reference list allows interested readers to further investigate issues of interest.
The first chapter in The Handbook of Contraception: A Guide for Practical Management is an overview of current contraceptive use in the United States, with a comparison of the effectiveness and cost of the various methods. Chapters 2 through 8 discuss hormonal methods of contraception, including combination oral contraceptives, the contraceptive patch, the contraceptive vaginal ring, progestin-only pills, and the new progestin implant. Chapter 7 on long-acting injectable contraceptives and Chapter 8 on intrauterine devices compare the two current options in each category clik here for download (source:medicalbooks4everyone.blogspot.com)

GYNECOLOGICAL DRUG THERAPHY

In no other area has the speed of progress in medical therapeutics been faster paced, and nowhere inmedicine have a greater number of patients been treated with relatively new pharmaceuticals than in the field of women’s health. Gynecology has traditionally been regarded as a largely surgical speciality. However, the place of surgery in the management of gynecological problems has been greatly reduced over the past two decades by the introduction of new and more effective means of treating many common gynecological disorders medically. Whole new subspecialty areas have appeared within the field, ranging from assisted reproduction tomanagement ofHIV/AIDS

Subspecialization has divided obstetrics and gynecology into several highly technical areas. The level of knowledge required to remain up-to-date in gynecological oncology, reproductive medicine, feto-maternal medicine, and urogynecology is expanding rapidly and can challenge full-time subspecialists as well as the generalist obstetricians and gynecologists who still comprise the majority of practitioners in the field. click here for download ebook(source:medicalbooksforeveryone.blogspot.com)

HANDBOOK OF DRUGS IN INTENSIVE CARE

The main challenge when I embarked in writing the third edition has been to keep it down to size. This third edition remains a concise book that explains how to use drugs safely and effectively in a critical care setting.
Doctors, nurses and other professionals caring for the critically ill patient will find it useful. It is intended to be small enough to fit in the pocket and to provide sufficient information about drug prescribing in the critically ill patient. To keep the book down to size has meant restricting the list of drugs to ones that I consider as common drugs. It is not intended to list every conceivable complication and problem that can occur with a drug but to concentrate on those the clinician is likely to encounter. These constraints mean that this pocket book should be seen as complementary to, rather than replacing, the standard textbooks.
The book is composed of two main sections. The A-Z guide is the major part and is arranged alphabetically by the non-proprietary name of the drug. This format has made it easier for the user to find a particular drug when in a hurry. The discussion on an individual drug is restricted to its use in the critically ill adult patient. The second part is comprised of short notes on relevant intensive care topics.click here for download ebook (source:medicalbooksforeveryone.blogspot.com)

HANDBOOK OF FOOD-DRUG INTERACTIONS

As health professionals from different disciplines, we learn the basic concepts, terminology, and procedures that are central to our areas of expertise. In doing so,we become acculturated to thinking, interacting, networking, and learning with peers from the same discipline. When we begin to interact as members of healthcare teams, we bring our own jargon and mores. Often we assume that others may understand us as fully and completely as our professional peers, but we fail to grasp different meanings or focus that others may have on a given subject, case, or problem. The term multidisciplinary is used to define teams in which different disciplines are represented but tend to function in isolation of each other. Interdisciplinary means that teams combine their unique talents and knowledge to create a working unit
This book is written by an interdisciplinary team of authors and contributors representing the fields of nutrition, pharmacy, dietetics, medicine, and technology. Each chapter and appendix was viewed from the aspect of different disciplines: “Is this something everyone knows, or is this something that one discipline is unlikely to know or is likely to view differently?” “What type of information would be helpful for all disciplines to have readily available?” The book attempts to bring the detailed and discipline-specific knowledge to other disciplines. In providing common concepts, communications among different disciplines can be improved and, in turn, improve healthcare. The authors of each chapter have worked from a perspective of generic drug names in every case. Example trade names have been provided solely for the convenience of readers. In no case do the authors or the editors intend any endorsement, or imply that the example trademark names possess any advantage over equivalent generic products.click here for download(source:medicalbookforeveryone.blogspot.com)

EBOOK IMUNOPHARMACOLOGY

As we entered the twenty-first century, major advances in the arena of recombinant DNA, hybridoma and transgenic technologies had not only revolutionized the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of a number of debilitating and lifethreatening diseases, but also provided novel modes of treatment. Whether it is the clinical application of recombinant cytokines, their agonists or antagonists, monoclonal antibodies, regulatory T cells, gene therapy or the concept of T cell vaccines, all these require understanding of an evolving discipline that worked on the interface of immunology, pathology, pharmacology and genetics called Immunopharmacology.

The initial emphasis of the discipline was the development of the drugs that
suppressed immune response to prevent tissue rejection after organ transplantation. The field once considered restricted only to protect the host from invading organisms by mounting immune and inflammatory responses evolved exponentially as we gradually learned about the exciting and sometimes adverse role of the products of the immune response in a very wide range of physiological and pathological settings ranging from cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal to neurological function. A number of these products and therapies based on their understanding not only continue to become symptomatic and curative therapeutic agents but have extensively contributed to the early diagnosis of a number of dreadful disorders.click here for download (Source:blog medicalbooks4everyone)

COLOR ATLAS OF PHARMACOLOGY

In many countries, medicine is at present facing urgent political and economic calls for reform. These socioeconomic pressures notwithstanding, pharmacotherapy has always been an integral part of the health care system and will remain so in the future. Well-founded knowledge of the preventive and therapeutic value of drugs is a sine qua non for the successful treatment of patients entrusting themselves to a physician or pharmacist. Because of the plethora of proprietary medicines and the continuous influx of new pharmaceuticals, the drug market is dif cult
to survey and hard to understand. This is true not only for the student in search of a logical systemfor dealing with the wealth of available drugs, but also for the practicing clinician in immediate need of independent information.
Clearly, a pocket atlas can provide only a basic framework. Comprehensive knowledge has to be gained frommajor textbooks. As is evident from the drug lists included in the Appendix, some 600 drugs are covered in the present Atlas. This number should be suf cient for everyday medical practice and could be interpreted as a Model List. The advances in pharmacotherapy made in recent years have required us to incorporate new plates and text passages, and to expunge obsolete approaches. Several plates needed to be brought in line with new
knowledge. click here for download
